Thank you for the shade trees

Thank you for the shade trees
17 maart 2019
In the past year we were able to plant 3000 shade trees in West Africa thanks to the help of Wereldwinkels. Shade trees?! Didn’t we do cocoa? Yep, that’s true. But the shade tree is of essential importance to grow cocoa trees. In this blog we’ll explain you everything about shade trees and how these shadow trees contribute to our mission.

Better productivity and less dependency of cocoa

One of our sourcing principles is a higher productivity and quality ánd independency of cocoa. Cocoa farmers produce an average of 500 kg cocoa beans per year. That’s not enough to earn a living income with. With investments in extra plant food, protection against diseases and plagues and extra labour, a cocoa farmer can jack up its harvest to 800 kg per year. Besides that, something else may contribute to a bigger harvest. Planting shade trees creates a nice climate for cocoa trees. And with a nice climate a cocoa tree pays off more trees (you know, cocoa pods).

Getting started in Ghana and Ivory Coast

Our cocoa farmer accelerator Ywe visited our cooperatives in February to hand over the collected money and to take a look at nurseries: this is where shade trees are grown.

Because we want cocoa farmers not only to be dependent on cocoa, we are particularly happy with the shade tree. Shade trees can be harvested from 10 years to make furniture.

Curious about our other four cooperation principles? Read all about it on the mission pages on our website.
