choco shop - general

Why do Tony's bars cost more in the Tony's store and webshop than at the supermarket (and do you recommend a lower CAP there as well)?

The prices Tony's charges in Tony's stores and in the online chocoshop are the prices we see as a fair price for a living income for farmers. Supermarkets are free to set their own prices and compete vigorously with each other on price. This leads to prices in supermarkets often being a bit lower. Tony's only advises supermarkets and encourages them to also set the fairest possible price.

Where can I find your terms and conditions?

You can find 'em here!

Where can I find and/or change my account details?

The small figure (top right) opens your profile page. Via 'edit profile' (left) you easily change your personal details. You'll also your previous orders, invoices, used addresses and custom made wrappers over here. Easy!

Can I add a gift message or card to my order?

Cool you want to send a card with your chocolate order! For €1,50 extra, you can add a card with a personal message to your order at checkout (with the exception of orders with personalized wrappers).

Heard of our personalized bars already? That's a bar and a card in one, isn't that fun! Create you own wrapper over here

Do you prefer a handwritten card by Team Tony's? We would like to make an exception for that. Send us an email with all the details in it and we will send a card from the office!

I have a complaint about my order. What should I do?

Ouch! That's unfortunate. Use our contact form to send us an email, or call the choco phone on +31 (0)20 20 512 00. We'll be happy to help you and find a solution!

personalised wrappers

What type of paper do you use for your wrappers?

Our bars aren't packed in one, but two separate wrappers. The first wrapper is a (1.5 grams) aluminum foil, as thin as possible. The second layer consists of a paper wrapper. Why packed separately? We just made it more easy for you to throw 'em away the right way once you finished your bar. The aluminum foil in the regular waste bin and the paper wrapper in the paper bin. Reeeeecycle!

Aluminium foil
For our large bars we use an aluminum foil that can be recycled via the regular waste flow. The benefit of the aluminum foil that we use at Tony's is that it is a foil that consists of one material (and isn't a composite of several layers). This way, the foil can be easily separated from other waste by the waste processor. Once separated, the aluminum foil can be recycled for 100%. That's how we like it!

*important note for when you finished your bar: it's best to throw away the aluminum foil in its entirety (not in several small pieces). This makes it easier for the waste processor to separate it from other waste in the recycling process. Easy does it!

Paper wrappers
The paper we wrap around our Tony's bars is made of Sappi Magno Natural pure fibers. Unbleached and uncoated. We used to use recycled paper, but unfortunately this paper is no longer available. What about another? At the moment there is no alternative of recycled paper available on the market that meets Tony's criteria in the areas of quality assurance, processability and look & feel. But ofcourse we'll continue to look for alternatives of recycled paper that do meet these criteria. That's a promise.

Do you have an example drawing and artwork specifications for me?

Of course we have 'em! Download (and upload) the template, artwork specifications and rules here.

I have a complaint about my personalized bar. Now what.. ?

Oops, that ain't nice! Please send an email to mijntony@tonyschocolonely.com, or call our chocophone (020 20 512 00). We are happy to help you and find a solution!

I want to upload my self made wrapper, how do I do that?

You can upload your design over here. Drag your design file to the square box on the upload page (below) and watch the preview in 3D. Happy? Hit that order button to pick your flavour and number of bars. Enjoy!

I want to order 4000 or more personalized bars, how do I do that?

For larger orders, the ordering process goes through a Tony from the Chocofancare team. Send an email to mijntony@tonyschocolonely.com and we'll be here to help!

I want to (re)sell personalized bars, is that allowed?

Personalized bars are meant as a gift. Soooo it's not allowed to resell them. But hey.. it's much more fun to give 'em away, right?

Heeelp! My personalized bar is missing in the delivery. What to do?

No worries! Our personalized bars are shipped from a different location than our regular chocolate bars. Your personalized bar is getting wrapped in its unique jacket at our friends of Wihabo (the printing company we work with). This means that combi orders don't always fall on your doormat at the same time. We expect you receive both parts of your order quickly. If this isn't the case, please let us know by sending an email to mijntony@tonyschocolonely.com.

So cool that you want to dive into Tony's and do your project about our company! Although we love to let everyone take a look in our choco(kitchen), we don't have the capacity to talk to everyone in person. If there is no suitable vacancy for you at the moment, we would advise you to keep an eye on the page. Although we are always open to anyone who wants to have a look in Tony's (choco)kitchen, we don't have the capacity to talk to everyone in person at the moment. We would prefer to drink a cup of cofffee with everyone, but the number of requests we receive every day is too high for that. There you'll find all the roles we're currently looking for to strengthen Team Tony’s and make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate. So keep an eye on it, because new vacancies are added regularly!

general

Why is red milk chocolate and blue dark chocolate?

In 2005 our first milk chocolate bar rolls off the production line. We choose to wrap it in a red wrapper, because we think this fits best with our alarming message. It didn't take long for people to ask about a dark chocolate bar, so we put it in a contrasting wrapper: blue. Fast forward to today and you'll see our chocolate family has grown enormously. We've got:
- 12 Classic bars
- 4 Exclusive bars
- 3 limited editions every year
- Seasonal bars like our extra big easter eggs, the easter bar, the whole alphabet in chocolate letters for Saint Nicolas in multiple flavours and the Christmas bar.

How many can you name from all our bars? Check your answers here in the chocolate shop!

Why is your chocolate Fairtrade?

When Tony's began, Max Havelaar (that's Fairtrade Netherlands) was the only organization seeking to promote fair trade and better living conditions for cocoa farmers. To qualify for Fairtrade certification, production conditions must meet certain minimum social and environmental standards. Also, as a certification system, Fairtrade is most closely aligned with our mission, because it guarantees a minimum price and works with cooperatives. Having said this, as far as we're concerned, certification is simply a starting point: the first step on the way to a fair supply chain. We believe it's possible to do more. That's why we developed our 5 Principles of Cooperation.

Do you also consider the environment?

Of course! We expect farmers to treat the environment with respect. And we actively encourage the farmers who supply our beans to implement more environmentally friendly production methods. The cooperatives we work with receive training. This helps minimize the use of pesticides and ensures appropriate and economical use of chemical fertilizer. Deforestation is strictly prohibited. Climate change is an increasingly important issue for Tony's, particularly since cocoa farmers are directly affected. Drought and extreme heat increase the likelihood of failed harvests and affect the quality of cocoa beans. Yet this is a trend that is expected to increase. At the moment, we offset our emissions through Justdiggit. We'll also be taking steps to reduce our emissions over the next few years. Ultimately, we want to ensure that whenever someone eats a bar of Tony's they're making a positive contribution to the environment.

In 2012, we also changed the wrappers on our bars. We now use uncoated, recycled FSC-certified paper. What?! Believe us, it's better for the environment. It means the wrappers on our bars are not coated with porcelain or kaolin. The paper is made from a mixture of recycled and FSC-certified paper. So, in a past life, the wrapper on your bar might have been the label on a jar of peanut butter or box of sprinkles! FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. Sounds impressive, doesn't it? And it is. It means the paper originates from sustainably managed forests. The foil we use contains as much recycled material as possible and we've also made it as thin as possible.

Why are your bars unequally divided?

To us it doesn't make sense for chocolate bars to be divided into chunks of equal sizes when there is so much inequality in the chocolate industry! The unevenly sized chunks of our 180g bars are a palatable way of reminding our choco friends that the profits in the chocolate industry are unfairly divided.

And in case you haven't noticed, the bottom of our bars represents the Equator. The chunks above are the Gulf of Guinea. From left to right you have Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin (terribly politically incorrect, we know, but we had to combine them to create enough space for a hazelnut), Nigeria and part of Cameroon.

What about all the other certification systems?

There are all kinds of labels on chocolate packaging. This is because there are several certification systems that operate under different names. Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance (previously Rainforest Alliance and UTZ before they merged in 2018) are independent certificates that follow ISEAL's Codes of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards, and there are also brands that have created their own certification systems such as Mondelez’s Cocoa Life and Nestle’s Cocoa Plan.

Certifications are third party checks on an external set of standards, a kind of compliance check on sustainability for companies. They are however not all the same. There are some fundamental differences between Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance. Fairtrade guarantees a minimum price for their cocoa to protect against market volatilities. Fairtrade believes that farmers are stronger when they join forces, so Fairtrade farmers must be united in a cooperative. Rainforest Alliance places strong emphasis on conservation of the environment and farmers receive a variable premium on top of the market price. They work with cooperatives, as well as independent farmers.

As far as we're concerned, certification is a starting point and the proliferation of certification models makes it harder for consumers to understand what they represent. Euromonitor International’s research in 2018 revealed own labels, such as Cadbury’s Cocoa Life or Nestlé’s Cocoa Plan, could create consumer confusion - ‘Many in-house schemes have yet to resonate; and consumers may be unclear about the changing working relationships between certifiers and brands.’ To create a fairer supply chain we believe that companies have to go further than certification and take full responsibility, that's why we have developed our 5 sourcing principles. We invite any other organisation that sources cocoa to come round for coffee (and chocolate) to learn more about how they can adopt these principles through Tony’s Open Chain.

Do you have a Tony's presentation guide?

So cool you want to do a Tony's Talk at school! We're honored. Of course we'll help you. Check out our chocolate guide here. You can also check out our latest FAIR report, there's a lot of information in there. Check it out here. You'll let us know how it went right?

Is a vegan bar planned to launch?

Vegan milk chocolate is not on our schedule, so we are of course happy to tell you why. Our focus is on 100% slave-free chocolate and we work hard every day to achieve that (not just our chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide in the industry). To this end, we want to inspire mainstream chocolate makers to have a transparant value chain and produce slave-free cocoa as well. With our focus on cocoa and our mission, a vegan quality mark is not on the agenda for us.

Why can't I find all the bars at the supermarket?

That's a good question! We have divided our bars, so you have to do more for one bar than for the other. Read more about it below:

Classics
The Classics in our family a.k.a. Tony's Rainbow. With our newest offspring milk cinnamon biscuit our Classic rainforest now consists of 12 flavors. And that makes it complete! You can recognize them by their bright, colorful jackets in one color. You can find our Classics at supermarkets and non-supermarkets.

Exclusives
Our Exclusives have all been a Limited Edition in the past. Yes really. Here's the thing: the winner of the three Limiteds always comes back in a new jacket as Exclusive after a few months! We called them into life to keep surprising our chocolate fans ('crazy about chocolate' as we are) and to offer our customers an exclusive assortment from the very beginning. That's why our Exclusives - the name says it all - are exclusively available from the non-supermarket stores that Tony's sells: Marqt, de Bijenkorf, Jamin, Wereldwinkels, WAAR!, gift and delicacy shops, among others. You'll also find them in Tony's Home Store (Pazzanistraat 1), Tony's Super Store (Oudebrugsteeg 15) and in Tony's online choco shop.

Limited Editions
Every autumn (just say first week of September) we traditionally come with three Limited Editions in three different flavours: the crazier, the better! Our Limiteds are produced in a limited edition, so the word "out" literally runs out. You can recognize them by the set of three. In December, our chocolate fans will be able to vote for your favo taste through our online channels. And the winner? You'll see them in the Exclusives range in the following spring.

Limited Editions
Every autumn we traditionally present three Limited Editions in three flavours: the crazier, the better! Our Limiteds are produced in a limited edition, so the word "on" literally runs out. You can recognize them by the set of three. In December you, our chocolate fans, will be able to vote for your favo taste through our online channels. And, uh, the winner? You'll probably see them in the Exclusives range in the following spring. In 2016, white carrot won walnut. And in September 2017 the new Limiteds are coming up again! You can find our Limited Editions exclusively at World Shops, WHERE, de Bijenkorf, Marqt, Jamin, Tony's Store and webshop and at smaller gift and delicatessen shops.

Relay bar
Here it comes: that's the next relay bar. Every six months, the relay bar takes over the relay baton from the previous bar. And don't forget to pass it on, because yes... it's a relay bar. Runnn to the shop, um, actually only to the Albert Heijn! Because this is one of those...

Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas)
Saint Nicholas is our favorite holiday. Oh come and have a look, what's in your shoe! A real Tony's syllable, by that dear Saint. A letter that can break you out of chocolate, that's what the Saint has been looking at.

Christmas
Christmas tree in your bar! For in, or under your Christmas tree. With extra chocolate around it, so you can break it out and hang it in your tree. We can't guarantee that it will hang for long, because the milk chocolate with mulled wine is so delicious that you might want to eat it right away. All I want for Christmas is yoo-hoo!

Easter
Our chocolate always looks its Easter best, but our nice big Easter eggs are all you need to eat! Packed in a handy egg carton, so you can easily hide them, hang them in the Easter roof or just put them all in your mouth at once.

Little ones
Just as good as their big brothers, but for the road.  Because for this little one you always have a place left in your bag, your pocket or... in your mouth. Also great for coffee, under a movie or for snacking during long train rides.

Tiny Tony's
Our Tiny's go very well together with coffee, tea, soda... uh, yeah, with everything actually.

Chocolate milk
Chocolate milk with no taste. No more than milk with the most delicious chocolate you might think. Well, that's about right! Not for sale in our webshop, but in the supermarket.

history

Who’s that Tony?

Tony's is named after journalist Teun van de Keuken. From 2002 to 2007 he investigated slavery in the chocolate industry for 'Keuringsdienst van Waarde' (a Dutch television program that features critical investigative journalism). He discovered that cocoa farmers in West Africa, and their children, were actually working as slaves. He tried to discuss this with several chocolate companies. When they declined, Teun decided to make his own slave free chocolate bars. He, Teun ('Tony' in Enlgish), felt very lonely in his battle against slavery in the chocolate industry, so he called the chocolate bar 'Tony's Chocolonely'.

How did it all start?

Eleven years ago while investigating slavery in the cocoa supply chain for 'Keuringsdienst van Waarde' (a Dutch television program that features critical investigative journalism), journalist Teun van de Keuken is shocked to discover that much of the chocolate sold in supermarkets is made by people working as slaves. And this often includes children. He finds this totally unacceptable. When he tries to discuss the situation with chocolate makers, many decline. So he decides to do something about it. The first Fairtrade Tony's Chocolonely bars roll off the production line in November 2005. In 2006 Teun registers his company with the Chamber of Commerce and Tony's Chocolonely embarks on its mission to eradicate slavery from the chocolate industry.

ingredients

Where does your cocoa come from?

In 2012 we started buying our cocoa mass directly from cocoa farmers in West Africa. We're now working with 6 cocoa cooperatives: 2 in Ghana (ABOCFA and Suhum Union) and 4 in Ivory Coast (Kapatchiva, ECAM, ECOJAD and SOCOOPACDI). All of these cooperatives benefit from our 5 Principles of CooperationOur long-term relationship with these cooperatives means that we know them well and can assist them with their (financial) management. The farmers know they can sell us their cocoa for a good price for the foreseeable future, so they can invest in their farms and maximize their crop. And you know that our bars will always taste as good

Is your chocolate also organic?

We buy some of our beans from ABOCFA in Ghana, which is the first certified organic cooperative in West Africa, but we don't pay the organic premium. We know that organic farming doesn't necessarily deliver a better income for farmers in West Africa. Organic farming is a skill. To be good at it, farmers have to be professional. They have to have a great deal of knowledge and they also have to be able to invest in their farms. This is far from the reality for most cocoa farmers. Unfortunately, it seems that organic farming does not guarantee a positive social impact. So for the moment we're not seeking to make our entire supply chain organic. That's why it doesn't say 'organic' on our wrappers. For us, social impact comes first. At the same time, we do what we can to protect the environment.

Do you have a sugar-free bar or one with a sugar substitute?

At the moment, we don't have any plans to produce a sugar-free Tony's bar or to produce one with a sugar substitute. Our mission is 100% slave free chocolate. To achieve this, we have to make the most amazing ethically produced chocolate, so we can help cocoa farmers create a better future for themselves and inspire other chocolate makers to follow our example. In other words, we want to change the mainstream chocolate industry. Sugar-free bars are still too much of a niche product. Producing one won't help the cocoa farmers. But this may not always be the case. We do our best to always be one step ahead.

Why is your chocolate milk not biological anymore?

The price of biological milk and sugar rose so enormously that we had to raise our prices. The result was that people stopped buying it. That meant we could buy less cocoa, sugar and milk from farmers. Which is not what we want. So, we decided to keep buying the same biological cocoa for the same price, but without the certification. Saves money you know. For the other ingredients we found alternatives that make just as much impact. Vera, our sugarbabe, researched sugar and found out what is actually 'sustainable'. In the end we chose to get our sugar Fairtrade and traceable in Mauiritus. Milk now comes from a group of German farmers via the 'Faire Milch'concept.

Do you have a vegan bar?

The 70% dark chocolate bar, dark almond sea salt and dark pecan coconut are basically vegan, but there is a minimal chance that milk or protein traces are in the bars. Our milk and dark bars are made in the same place, where after the production of milk bars a "transition batch" is running first to remove any remaining chocolate from the line before the dark bars are made (and vice versa). In this way, some traces may remain on the factory line. As a result, we can't 100% guarantee that it's not in it, and strict vegans would like to have that guarantee. However, if this is not a problem for you, then we say: enjoy your bar!

Do your bars contain lactose?

All our white and milk chocolates contain milk products. The 70% pure chocolate bar is basically vegan (i.e. lactose free), but there is a chance that there is milk in the bar. Our milk bars and vegan dark bars are made in the same place, where after the production of milk bars a "transition batch" is first turned to remove any remaining chocolate before dark bars are made (and vice versa). In this way, some milk may remain on the factory line. As a result, we cannot guarantee that there is nothing in it. On the back of the wrapper we also mention that it may contain traces of milk (this includes lactose).

collaborations

Would you like to sponsor me/my event?

We get a lot of sponsorship requests every day. We have drawn up some chocolate rules for this purpose. We only choose the requests that can bring us a little closer to our mission: 100% slave-free chocolate. This means that if we sponsor an event/action/person, this must relate to West Africa (Ghana/Ivory Coast), for the benefit of farmers in Ghana/Ivory Coast, or to help in the fight against modern slavery.

In addition, it is important for us not to actively sponsor children/teenagers, because we have a tasty but unhealthy product.

And what about a goodiebag?
In a goodiebag our bar get lost between all the other products and there is very little room for our story, so you won't see us in goodiebags.

Would you like to partner/collaborate with me (for promotions)?

How nice of you to think of Tony's for this! We get a lot of requests for sponsorship and requests for competitions/promotions every day, so we can't work together with everyone, no matter how much we want to do that. That's why we choose the requests that can bring us a little closer to our mission: 100% slave-free chocolate. We think it's important that attention is paid to our story, so that the cocoa farmers get what they're entitled to.

If your request does contribute to our mission, feel free to send us an email!

Can I have a bar to test it on my social media channel?

It's so good to hear you want to put your teeth into our new, jaw-dropping bar. We get a lot of sponsorship requests every day, so we choose the requests that can bring us a bit closer to our mission: 100% slave free chocolate. We think it's important that there's attention for our story as well as our surprising flavours.

You are of course very welcome in one of our Tony's Stores. There you can come and taste all the flavours, including our very latest ones! We DO want to hear ofcourse which one is your fave..!
