Tony’s Chocolonely puts the ethical in Easter with egg-citing return of Easter products

March 20, 2023

Amsterdam, 20/03/23 — Tony’s Chocolonely, the chocolate-making impact company on a mission to create a fairer chocolate industry, is bringing back their Easter product line. With an estimated sale of 30 million traceable Easter eggs this year, Tony’s will pay 15,000 cocoa farmers a price that enables a living income. All while raising awareness about the bitter truth behind one of the biggest chocolate sales moments of the year.

Tony’s brings back Easter range for conscious Choco Fans

This year, Tony’s Chocolonely is bringing back their Easter range. Choco Fans can choose from a variety of Easter products that support Tony’s mission to make 100% slave-free chocolate the norm.

Back by popular demand, the limited-edition lemon meringue bars, packed with meringue pieces (made from free-range eggs) and a hint of zesty lemon, are divided into unequally sized chunks. Tony's unequally divided bars remind chocolate lovers that the profits made by chocolate companies around Easter time are unequally divided. The bars also feature an Easter egg shape for a fun seasonal twist.

Tony's Easter bars will be hit stores alongside Tony’s Egg-stra Special Chocolate Eggs. Available in pouches or in a playful egg carton, Tony’s Egg-Stra Special Chocolate Eggs are small, solid versions of Tony’s best-selling classic bar flavors. This includes our milk chocolate 32%, milk caramel sea salt, milk hazelnut, milk almond honey nougat, dark milk 42% pretzel toffee, dark 51% almond sea salt and dark 70% chocolate.

Tony's impact is no yolk.

The global chocolate industry is worth $127.9 billion, and Easter is a huge sales moment for all chocolate companies, Tony’s Chocolonely included. Despite high global chocolate revenue, profits aren’t passed on to cocoa farmers and excessively low prices drive farmers into poverty – the root cause of child labor and modern slavery.

Tony’s Chocolonely exists to change this. To structurally lift farmers out of poverty, Tony’s sources all their cocoa beans through Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles – starting with paying a higher price for cocoa.

More chocolate sold means, more cocoa beans are bought, resulting in more impact made for farmers in West Africa. This year, from their Easter product-line alone, Tony's Open Chain sourced almost 30 million cocoa beans from partner cooperatives in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.

Last year, Tony's Open Chain paid farmers $6.5 million in premium. This is the extra we pay, on top of the farmgate price, to enable cocoa farmers to earn a living income. The result? 1/3 of farmers at our partner co-ops are at or above a living income. Implementing Tony's 5 Sourcing Principles has also driven down child labor from 50% to less than 5% among the cocoa-growing communities that Tony's Open Chain works with.

NOTES TO EDITORS

About Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles

Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles practically address the complex issue of poverty in cocoa through concrete solutions and long-term opportunities. These principles consist of (1) fully traceable cocoa beans, (2) paying a higher price for cocoa to enable farmers to earn a living income, (3) promoting strong co-operatives to professionalize and make the work of cocoa farming safe and sustainable, (4) engaging in long-term commitments giving farmers income security, (5) coaching farmers to improve their productivity and cocoa quality and improve their agricultural knowledge on crops. Only when all of these elements are applied, can companies structurally improve the lives of farmers and their families.

About Tony’s Chocolonely:

Tony’s Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate. Putting social impact before profit — Tony's Chocolonely's vision is to make chocolate 100% slave free. Not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide.

The company was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used child labor and modern slavery.

Since then, Tony’s Chocolonely has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the chocolate industry. Tony’s Chocolonely leads by example, building direct, long-term relationships with cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, paying them a higher price and working together to solve the underlying causes of modern slavery and child labour.

Tony’s Chocolonely wants to inspire the industry as a whole to make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate. They believe that being a better business should be the norm, not the exception. The brand has grown to become one of the market leaders in the Netherlands and its bars are now available almost worldwide, with offices in the Netherlands, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium and Sweden.

Tony's Chocolonely is a B-Corp and Fairtrade-certified.
