Tony’s Chocolonely launches Littl’ Bits: a munchable chocolate range that ends exploitation in chocolate by ensuring cocoa farmers are paid fairly.

August 29, 2023

Amsterdam, 29/08/23 — Tony’s Chocolonely, the impact company sweetening the cocoa industry by fighting for 100% slave-free chocolate, launches Littl’ Bits: a new munchable chocolate range, released in four flavours. Chocolate lovers can grab a handful and chow down on exciting flavours in each bag. Despite their small size, Littl’ Bits create a big impact for cocoa farmers. By paying them a fair price for their cocoa Tony's Chocolonely enables a living income for farmers – lifting them out of poverty and ending exploitation in chocolate.

Making chocolate fairer, bit by bit.
By launching this new chocolate range, Tony’s Chocolonely continues to show fans and other chocolate companies that delicious and responsibly sourced choc can go together.

Right now, 1.56 million children work under illegal circumstances on cocoa farms in West Africa. Poverty, driven by an unequally divided cocoa chain, is the root cause of all illegal labour in cocoa.

Tony’s Chocolonely found a way to change that. To move out of poverty cycles, cocoa farmers need to earn a living income and receive the Living Income Reference Price (LIRP) for their cocoa. Tony’s Chocolonely pays the LIRP, which equals 77–82% on top of what most other chocolate brands pay for their cocoa.

By paying farmers a price that enables a living income and applying the proven Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles to their cocoa production, the impact company is working to end exploitation in chocolate, bit by bit. With Littl’ Bits, fans can grab a handful of choc and support Tony's mission to make chocolate 100% slave free with every bite.

Choc-full of flavours
Tony’s Chocolonely stirs things up with Littl’ Bits in both all-time-favourite bar flavours and new flavour combinations, presented in colourful (plastic-free) pouches. Chewy and crunchy cores are covered in a chunky layer of ethical and Fairtrade chocolate made from 100% traceable cocoa, for a drool-worthy and impactful choco experience. Choco Fans can try out these Littl’ Bits editions:

  • triple chocolate mix with milk, white and dark layered balls of chocolate

  • milk caramel sea salt & biscuit mix with crunchy butterscotch caramel and biscuit wrapped in thick milk chocolate

  • milk marshmallow & biscuit mix with chewy marshmallow and biscuit wrapped in thick milk chocolate

  • dark orange choco cookie with crunchy choco cookie wrapped in chunky orange dark chocolate (this one is vegan)

Tony’s Chocolonely loves sharing their chocolate and story with all chocolate lovers. Littl’ Bits is no different: easy to grab by the handful, making them perfect for sharing (or munching solo). NOTES TO EDITOR

About Tony’s Chocolonely:

Tony’s Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate. Putting social impact before profit — Tony's Chocolonely's vision is to make chocolate 100% slave free. Not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide.

The company was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used child labour and modern slavery.

Since then, Tony’s Chocolonely has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the chocolate industry. Tony’s Chocolonely leads by example, building direct, long-term relationships with cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, paying them a higher price and working together to solve the underlying causes of modern slavery and child labour.

Tony’s Chocolonely wants to inspire the industry as a whole to make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate. They believe that being a better business should be the norm, not the exception. The brand has grown to become one of the market leaders in the Netherlands and its bars are now available almost worldwide, with offices in the Netherlands, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium and Sweden.

Tony's Chocolonely is a B-Corp and Fairtrade-certified.

About the Living Income Reference Price

  • Tony's Chocolonely pays a higher price for all the cocoa they buy to enable farmers to earn a living income, called the Living Income Reference Price (LIRP).

  • The LIRP is higher than Fairtrade premiums, and higher than the national (farmgate) prices for cocoa.

  • Right now, they pay 82% more than the national price in Côte d'Ivoire and 77% more than the national price in Ghana.

About Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles

Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles address the complex issue of poverty in cocoa through concrete solutions.  The principles are (1) sourcing fully traceable cocoa beans, (2) paying a higher price for cocoa to enable farmers to earn a living income, (3) promoting strong partner co-operatives to professionalize and make the work of cocoa farming safe and sustainable, (4) engaging in long-term commitments to boost   farmers’ income security, (5) training  farmers to improve their productivity and cocoa quality as well as  their agricultural knowledge on crops.  Only when all five principles are applied can companies structurally improve the lives of cocoa farmers and their families in the long run.
