A small update on health and safety and heavy metals

At Tony’s, we take health and safety very (very) seriously. And that’s why we want to discuss the article from the product testing site Consumer Reports with you directly. In 2022, they found that lead and cadmium were present in most popular dark chocolate products, including our dark chocolate 70% bar. Why? ’Cause these metals occur naturally in soil + during the harvesting process.

We regularly test our ingredients to make sure that our tasty, chunky chocolate bars are well within the range that European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deem safe. And they are!

The Consumer Reports study used the guidelines set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), these aren’t food safety standards.

Meanwhile, a 2024 study by ÖkoTest, a trusted consumer researcher in Germany which tests products in quality but also broader environmental and safety compliances, rated Tony's Chocolonely 'Good’, and included similar heavy metal levels. ÖkoTest adheres to the most stringent food and safety standards in its testing.

So you can rest assured that Tony’s dark chocolate meets all legal requirements and the same strict standards as other foods you buy on a day-to-day basis and is safe to enjoy!
